Maneki Neko the Lucky Cat

There are a few legends around the Maneki Neko. She (or maybe a he) supposedly saved some rich guy’s life long long ago by waving him to go away from under a tree that got hit by lightning. Also there’s a story about a beheaded cat that brought the grieving owner luck after being reincarnated into a wooden statue or appearing in a poor woman’s dream with a good business-proposal.
Point is, since the 17th century this cat brings Luck, Health, Wealth and Love, so we felt the need to repay his duties by recreating him in the purest and delicate canvas of all: paper. May Maneki Neko keep on being our beloved good luck charm and live his paper-life in good health, prosperity and full of love himself. It’s the least we can do.

We have four Maneki Neko’s to choose from:
-Gold, for Wealth
-Pink, for Love!
-White, for Prosperity
-Black, against all bad luck

Cleaning out the closet

Last months seemed to have been very quiet? Au contraire, but a lot of stuff got prioritized over posting, that’s all. Headquarters moved to a new place on the other side of town (A place that got to be build first) and to another server in cyberspace. We still are looking in boxes for stuff we lost during the move a few weeks ago and get confronted with little bugs, but we feel confident to pick up things where we left them, to begin with some custom designs.

First of all we were happy to be invited to produce another custom-bear to celebrate the joyous fact an immensely huge bear-statue got revealed in the pro-active ‘New West’-part of Amsterdam. Everyone could bring home a tiny version of the same sleepy colossus thanks to designer Iwan Daniëls. If you don’t mind the Dutch gibberish, just click ‘download’ on this page to get your own bear and complete your collection.

Also, lovely Darla, master-chef from sweet pie heaven Bakingdom customized Howie Owl into 3 new Harry Potter characters Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. You can also bake a cake (or ten!) while you are at it getting these beauties (scroll down to the end of the post).

Another new bear-custom was sent to us by French designer Merrci. From being a fanatic papertoy-collector, he naturally moved up via customizing to designing (great) kits of his own. He’s an example to us all, thankks for that Get his custom here.

Talking Tree

In a roundabout way to make karmatical sense, creating a paper tree would be an interesting philosophical way to go. And honestly, we believe it does.

When Pirooz Kalayez from SanghaFilms asked us to help him raise money to fund his next indie movie, based on the contemporary novella ‘Shoplifting from American Apparel‘, it would be our way to gain some karma-kudos. The stars aligned quite right too: we LOVE cinema, the celebrated source-material by Tao Lin for the film shows us the life as it actually happens right NOW and around us (it’s very much about internet) and the whole project is small and independent, just like we are ourselves. Based on the tree-character for the movie, designed by comic artist Jeffrey Brown, we designed the easy-to-build paperkit to make up a bit for all the paper we’ve used the past years.

So, this paperkit is still for free, we only ask of you to investigate this movie-project (FB, Twitter) and if you like the whole idea to help Pirooz and his crew to actually make it happen. If you donate only $20 (or more!) you become a shoplifting Swami (which is a big deal!), feel established as a movie co-producer and get the paperkit, a schmancy unique T-shirt, the movie poster, the soundtrack of the movie AND ‘thank you’-credits IN the movie. Wow, all this for about the same amount as parking your car for 4 hours here in Amsterdam.

Let’s do this! and show the world internet does make dreams come true. Maybe, if they get enough money, they might even have a little cameo for Brad Pitt, or Megan Fox! I surely hope so

Papertoy Monsters!

On 25th of Januari a lot of stuff happened in the past. In 1348 for example, a strong earthquake stroke the South Alpine region of Friuli in modern Italy, causing considerable damage to buildings as far away as Rome. Also, on this exact same date in 1879 The Bulgarian National Bank has been founded and, in recent times, it’s the day of the first Emmy Awards being presented (1949), Idi Amin leading a coup becoming Uganda’s president (1971), MER-B landing on Mars (2004) and the invasion of Iraq in 2003… But we guess you didn’t know this: from today and this year on, it’s been presented as International Papertoy Monster Day!

Reason for this joyful event is the launch of the much-anticipated book ‘Papertoy Monsters’, curated by Brian Castleforte and published by Workman, already topping the list of children’s craftbooks worldwide. Obviously, we contributed to this book with two monsters: Grimp and Zwart, so get your copy before it’s totally out of stock.

Mind you: these are monster-sketches (duh!). In Papertoy Monsters, all the 50 (!) colourful monsters are printed on both sides of the sheet, pre-cut and pre-folded, so you only need to pop them out of the book to glue them together. It will not get easier for you. Ever.
